Expected Standard: Learners will correctly show they understand the importance of Physical Education and Sport, choose suitable careers, and accurately describe the history of PE and Sport in Zambia.
1.2 Physical Education, Health and Safety
Specific Competence: Learners will be able to provide first aid and perform safety actions, and understand how to protect the environment in sports. Learning Activities: Students will discuss first aid and its goals (prevent harm, save lives, help recovery, reduce injury), identify what's in a first-aid kit (bandages, scissors, antiseptic paint), practice first-aid and safety actions (like CPR, RICE routine for injuries, DRABC safety check), and explain why protecting the environment is important in sports (avoiding injuries, reducing pollution, promoting fair play). They will also show how to protect the environment through sports (planting trees, reducing waste, reusing items, recycling). Expected Standard: Learners will correctly perform first-aid and safety actions, and accurately show they understand environmental protection in Physical Education and Sport.
1.3 Sports Facilities and Equipment: Creation, Management, and Maintenance
Specific Competence: Learners will create sports facilities and equipment, and know how to manage and maintain them. Learning Activities: Students will design sports facilities (like courts, pitches, running tracks, goal posts) and equipment (like balls, skipping ropes, hurdles) for schools. They will then make these facilities and equipment. They will also learn and show how to manage sports facilities and equipment (regular checks, good scheduling, keeping track of items, training users on safety, planning for emergencies) and how to maintain them (cleaning, repairing, proper storage, disinfecting equipment). Expected Standard: Learners will correctly create sports facilities and equipment, and properly manage and maintain them.
1.4 Movements and Perceptual Motor Learning
Specific Competence: Learners will perform different movement patterns, combine them, and do activities that improve how their body and mind work together. Learning Activities: Students will perform various movement patterns and formations (like semi-circle, V-formation, S-formation). They will combine different movement patterns (like bending, moving away from the body, moving towards the body). They will also practice parts of a training session (warm-up, main activity, cool-down) and do activities that help their mind and body coordination (like moving from place to place, moving parts of the body while staying in one place, balancing, and handling objects). Expected Standard: Learners will correctly perform movement patterns and formations, combine movement patterns, and carry out perceptual motor learning activities.
1.5 Fitness Activities
Specific Competence: Learners will perform activities that improve their health and fitness, including isotonic and isometric exercises. Learning Activities: Students will identify health-related fitness activities (like endurance, body composition, flexibility, muscle strength). They will discuss the benefits of these activities (physical, mental, emotional health, preventing diseases). They will perform various health-related activities (like jogging, tug-of-war, stretching routines). They will also describe and explain the benefits of isotonic activities (muscle contraction with joint movement, like walking, climbing stairs, push-ups) and isometric activities (muscle contraction without joint movement, like pushing a wall, holding a crouch position). They will then perform these isotonic and isometric exercises. Expected Standard: Learners will correctly perform health-related activities, isotonic activities, and isometric activities.
1.6 Gymnastics and Safety
Specific Competence: Learners will perform tumbling and stunts safely, understanding the importance of gymnastics. Learning Activities: Students will discuss why gymnastics is important (improves flexibility, endurance, agility). They will apply safety rules for gymnastics (like spotting, tucking the chin for rolls, checking equipment, following instructions). They will then perform tumbling and stunts (like traveling movements, static holds, and rotational movements). Expected Standard: Learners will properly perform tumbling and stunts activities.
1.7 Recreational Games and Activities
Specific Competence: Learners will perform step and rhythmic patterns in aerobics and play traditional games. Learning Activities: Students will demonstrate step and rhythmic patterns in aerobics (like rhythmic steps, leg and arm stretches, sidekicks, neck rolls). They will also perform traditional games (like jumping games, rhythmic games, manipulative games, breaking-through games). Expected Standard: Learners will accurately perform step and rhythmic patterns of aerobics and correctly perform traditional games.
1.8 Swimming and Water Safety
Specific Competence: Learners will apply water safety practices and maintain good pool hygiene. Learning Activities: Students will create pretend water emergency situations. They will research and present on water safety topics (like strong currents, pool safety, water-borne sicknesses). They will show water safety practices (using life jackets, walking safely near water, good hygiene, knowing pool depth, life-saving actions like breathing). They will also practice pool hygiene (avoiding spitting, showering before swimming, not urinating or defecating in the pool) and discuss how to keep pools clean and well-maintained. Expected Standard: Learners will correctly apply water safety practices and effectively practice pool hygiene.
1.9 Sports Skills Development (Athletics, Ball, Board, and Racquet Games)
Specific Competence: Learners will perform basic skills in various sports, including athletics, football, netball, chess, draught, and badminton. Learning Activities: Students will perform skills in track events (like sprints, middle-distance running, relays). They will perform basic skills in Football and Netball (like dribbling, shooting, catching, passing, marking). They will perform basic skills in Chess and Draught (like castling, en passant, basic algebraic notation). They will also perform basic skills in Badminton (like gripping the racquet, different strokes, footwork).
